The gift of Love…

November 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The Holiday season started and with it comes the possibility to find the perfect gifts for your loved ones…

Here are the two I came across this week. Both are perfect, cute and definitely scream LOVE…

The Smittens, ideal for long and romantic walks in winter in the snow is just 49$ at Restoration Hardware. Could there be any better way to end the year and start 2010?

The other one is Damien Hirst’s  All You Need is Love, Love, Love. Printed on silkscreen from an edition of  50 and available for a couple thousands dollars at Gagosian will give you a daily reminder that Love is really all you need -well that and a Damien Hirst in your living room!

Aurelie Bidermann, jewelry with an edge

November 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

dresscode-AurelieBidermann_headshot

I met with Aurelie Bidermann because I just couldn’t get my eyes of one of her piece I had spotted in a magazine. One of those I have to have it moment… Since her line is now available online, I spend hours browsing, hesitating and making a very long list for Santa!

A breeze, Aurelie Bidermann is just a dream. Totally uncomplicated, straightforward, no sweat, a piece of cake – and a pretty one too. She wears no make up, a simple black dress -hmm Alaia s’il vous plait- with flats.

aurelie_bidermann_reference

How can you not love this girl. No diva in her, just a sense of simplicity and fun.

Ok, so now we meet at San Ambroeus and she is already there, sipping a cappuccino. Like her jewelry, Aurelie is pretty and unaffected, whimsical and yet her energy is strong, she certainly knows where she is going. Purpose and beauty mixed together.

Actually, during the 2 hours we spend together, she moves from a butterfly energy: flirty and romantic, to this old soul with a deep perspective on the world and finishes with this sexy comment.

Check out her answers, I left the meeting feeling she could be a friend, one that you trust no matter what, and also a sister, the one you just can spend hours giggling with. That’s the way Aurelie makes you feel!

So let’s start with the quiz

Where do you find inspiration?

AB: Museum and shopping, definitely shopping (she laughs).

aurelie_bidermann_necklace

What is your most recent coup de foudre?

AB: A cherry Alaia dress – the same color as my nails - she is a fan of the couturier since her teenage years and has been collecting his dresses ever since… would love to check out her closet. Rephrase that.. I am green with envy

I ask her what her current state of mind is but she brushes the question with a simple gesture of the hand and a gentle: I prefer not to answer “ZAT” one. OK now right there is a very Parisian trait: a polite manner of keeping some things personal. Discretion.  French women have this air of mystery, they do not share the real deep personal stuff that we are used on this side of the Atlantic. Perhaps we should send them a truckload of our shrinks – HEY no screams, we still have plenty!

What is your greatest indulgence?

AB: To forgive others and myself, nobody is perfect (she says this with a profound maturity)

What is the quality you most like in a man?

AB: A sense of humor, being charming and he must be focused on me (my mouth drops… I make her repeat… with her French accent it sounded like f**ck us… I share that with her and she says: yes that too lol!)

What is your motto?

AB: Love, Fantasy and Serenity

Are you in love or in the mood for love?

AB: in the mood for love even when in love. Because there is nothing better than flirting, dallying. She laughs with a twinkle in her eye, very Lolita!

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

AB: Generosity, trust (and you know she has both in large quantities!)

Who are the women that inspire you, in world history, in fiction or in real life? A muse?

AB: A mix of my mom, specially her carefree style in the 70‘s. I think of the jewelry that I would want to wear. My girlfriends.

What would be the best compliment a man could give to a woman?

AB: it would be waking up after a late night with puffy eyes and hearing him say: you are beautiful. Then you know it’s love because he is taking about the real/inside beauty.

A true romantic at heart, she confides that she lived in New York for 2 years with her American boyfriend… I should have suggested her to stick to the French because one thing we will all agree upon is that we have few bachelors in NY … how about for each shrink we send to Paris, we get a french bachelor?

What is the best thing that French women have? and American women?

AB: French women, they are natural, chic, cool in and easy going in their looks. It’s like: we don’t want to try hard. American women: I envy their perfectionism. I admire it, because me I’m borderline chaos. The American, even when it’s hot and humid, their hair is perfect, their nails are perfect and I’ll be sweating!

OK so right there is a myth that goes down the drain: Aurelie does 1h 1/2 of Barre au sol  with a coach 4 times a week (that is the grueling Ballerina training before they start dancing)

Now food, I ask.

AB: In Paris, I never watch what I eat but I mean it’s much easier than in NY. The portions are much smaller. There is no doughnuts. In France I eat meat and vegetables and in NY the equivalent is hamburger and fries. I adapt.

BTW, her favorite address is Barney Greengrass! and yes I had her repeat to make sure she was not talking about Barney’s restaurant!

Do you have a French secret?

AB: never ever do I wear foundation. It is the secret to a beautiful skin. Foundation looks like pancake. (Well that works when you have that young and pretty skin already because if I don’t not wear foundation… I look like a big pink thing with dark circles in the middle but enough about normal people)

Anyway back to Food, Any Favorites?

AB: A Roblochon cheese

SURPRISE: this girl not only sweats but she eat smelly cheese and yet managed to score an American boyfriend…
ENVY: And he would whisper You are so beautiful in the morning when she has no makeup.
CONVICTION: she sold her soul to the devil.
ADMIRATION: she gets to buy Alaia dresses with the proceeds.
BRILLIANT: Nobel Prize Material…

Before we separate, she insists on dispelling a French myth to our readers… French women are not naturally thin, they work hard at it.

Well I am happy to hear this. So French Woman try hard. They just do it the Parisian way which seems effortless, polite and discrete.

CLEOPATRA – an oil for lovers. Entices strangers you secretly desires to come forward and respond.

November 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Yes this oil exists and I found it !

At Enchantements, a little store on the Lower East Side of Manahattan, there is a remedy for every situation whether about Love, Money, Success or Inspiration.  I love stepping in these places where you know, just pushing the door, that you have entered another world, the eariness sensation.

Despite a lovely lady who assisted me, I didn’t buy any oils because I couldn’t decide which one of my dilemmas I should tackle first, but I did leave with a few candles that promised “sunshine joy and happiness” in my life. I figured with that, the rest of my issues will resolve by themselves!

Next to me, was a gorgeous girl buying candles for job hunting and an oil to attract love and Upper East Side ladies who, whispering to the store assistant, seemed to know about some special behind-the-counter articles.

Here are my favorites, just reading the list makes me happy… results are already on their way!

DRAGON’S BLOOD – (note: no dragons were injured in the making of this oil!) for protection, personal power, love, money, success and uncrossing.
GODDESS of LOVE – to bring out total animal instincts in those you desire!  Wear with caution!
SAINT JUDE – The Patron Saint of Impossible causes.  What more can we say?
QUEEN OF SHEBA – Use when a marriage proposal is sought from a reluctant individual.
SILK LOV -to help bring you a refined and cultured lover.
STAY AT HOME – helps keep a “wandering lover” at home.
TWINKLE TOES – For joy and happiness and all around “feelin’ good!
ARABIAN NIGHTS – love attraction and increases sexual magnetism.  Attracts new friends – makes others find you interesting and alluring.
JEZEBEL – a money drawing formula for women whose occupations rely on the charity of strangers.  Good for women who rely on tips for their income.  Also, helps to get men to spend $ on you!
HERMES – Aids in concentration and creativity.
KNOWLEDGE – Works well for the serious student as well as attracting Mercurial spirits for any analytical problem. (Yes, you still have to study!)

Buy them all online at www.Enchantementsinnyc.com or best go to the store located at 424 E 9th St. between 1st Ave. and Ave. A.

cd_cover_couleurs

This is the second time, I hear her angel voice.  The first time, she surprised me with a birthday song and yesterday she played for this uber-cool artsy crowd in a Chelsea studio. Nicole Renaud has this surreal presence with this crystal sharp voice and when she enters the room with her transparent luminous accordion, everyone in the room literally stopped and experienced heaven.

She is playing on Monday in New York the songs of her new album “Couleurs”, a love story seen through colors – available on iTunes.

Run to see her…

“Couleurs” multimedia concert @ Galapagos art space in Dumbo
Monday November 23rd, 8 pm
$12 cover, tickets at www.galapagosartspace.com
16 main street, corner of water st in dumbo.

I have an amazing video of last night on my iphone which I will ad here as soon as I have mastered some technical issues!

Get a glass of red wine and sing out loud!

November 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

One of the most beautiful love songs written by Edith Piaf and mastered by Grace Jones.

Eyes that gaze into mine,
A smile that is lost on his lips—
That is the unretouched portrait
Of the man to whom I belong.

When he takes me in his arms
And speaks softly to me,
I see life in rosy hues.
He tells me words of love,
Words of every day,
And in them I become something.
He has entered my heart,
A part of happiness
Whereof I understand the reason.
It’s he for me and I for him, throughout life,
He has told me, he has sworn to me, for life.
And from the things that I sense,
Now I can feel within me
My heart that beats.

In endless nights of love,
A great delight that comes about,
The pains and bothers are banished,
Happy, happy to die of love.

When he takes me in his arms
And speaks softly to me,
I see life in rosy hues.
He tells me words of love,
Words of every day,
And in them I become something.
He has entered my heart,
A part of happiness
Whereof I understand the reason.
It’s he for me and I for him, throughout life,
He has told me, he has sworn to me, for life.
And from the things that I sense,
Now I can feel within me
My heart that beats.

See-thru skirts, only in Japan? Not even…

November 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

skirt1skirt5skirt3skirt2

So I received these pictures from a friend that the new rage in Japan was skirts printed with visible underwear to appear as they were see-thru.

And when I saw, I really thought that this was only possible in Japan where Fashion often flirts with unusual taste. Sorry to report that it is a fake story that must have come from a very vivid imagination of a Photoshop artist or maybe from a guy, who like lots of kids, just wished he had some superpowers!

Feministing and the single dating scene …

November 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

fff_small

Just read in today’s NY Times magazine an interview of Jessica Valenti, Founder of Feministing. Well believe it or not, they are the most widely read publication that there is: the blog received 600,000 readers this month so obviously she has succeed in making Feminism cool again for women online. Her blog and then her book, Full Frontal Feminism, a young women’s guide to why Feminism matters, is her attempt to break down the cliches such as Feminists are Ugly, Feminism is for old ladies, But things are fine the way they are, etc.

And it is followed by many other chapters such as Feminist do it better (and other sex tips), Pop World gone wild, Beauty Cult and more. I have yet to read it but will because her voice is witty and and most definitely the reflexion of the younger generation. And when was the last time you laughed reading a feminist paper??

The next Femninisting event happening in New York is PROGRESSIVE SINGLE MINGLE a cocktail party for the left-leaning – Find a lover, mate, date, partner, soul mate, friend, fling….or all of the above! Thursday November 19th @ People Lounge, 163 Allen St., bet. Rivington and Stanton, New York, NY

Since Jessica Valenti recently got married, she’s obviously is familiar with her subject matter.

Young artists help you get your priorities straight!

November 13, 2009 · 1 Comment

Boundless by Lizzie Hunter

boundless_artworkimage

(limited editions × low prices) + the internet = art for everyone

Any art lover can be an art collector…

20×200 is a website that each week brings you limited editions of young emerging artists at very affordable prices (starting at 20$, can’t beat that!)

I love the concept for many reasons: it takes the elitisme out of art and really leaves you with no more excuses for leaving your walls empty. It helps young artist get recognition and allows the art world to be more fluid, with increased exchanges. And what a better gift than the usual pair of socks for your cousin, father in law, etc.

I am sure that Andy Warhol, master of the Pop art movement would have approved of 20×200. By the way, his 200 One dollar Bill Painting was sold this week at Sotheby’s. The estimate was between $8 million and $12 million. It sold for… $43,762,500.

Start collecting!
